Dr. David Baskin
Co-Founder & Clinical Director
I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Co-Founder of Mind Matters Psychology Group. Originally from California, I received my Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University while working throughout the Boston Area as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). I then spent over two years serving as a volunteer and community health educator with the Peace Corps in The Republic of Moldova. After returning home, I began my graduate education at New York University where I received a Master of Arts in Psychology with specializations in Forensic Psychology and Adult Psychopathology. I then earned a Master of Science and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the PGSP-Stanford University Consortium, and completed my Internship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. I then pursued Postdoctoral specialty training with the Victims of Violence Program at Cambridge Health Alliance as a Clinical Fellow in Psychology at Harvard Medical School. Following my Postdoctoral Fellowship training, I worked as a Clinical Psychologist with the Institute for Advanced Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital beginning in 2014, where I held the title of Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine. My work at Mount Sinai focused on providing clinical mental health services in a LGBTQ+ ambulatory care environment, with a particular focus on patients with HIV/AIDS and members of the transgender community. I have additionally maintained a private practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for over ten years. I specialize in the treatment of complex psychological trauma and I am additionally certified in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute.
My style as a therapist is collaborative, interactive, empathic, and non-judgmental. I view psychotherapy as a vehicle for growth and change, and as a process that must be tailored to each individual’s needs and unique identity. I like to begin with a brief phone consultation, followed by an extended first visit in which I carefully consider your reasons for seeking therapy and work with you to develop a personalized and holistic treatment plan. I strongly believe that developing a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship is a vital part of treatment, and it is therefore essential that you find a therapist with whom you connect.
As a trauma specialist, I provide treatment to people who have experienced physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. For those who have suffered prolonged, repeated trauma in their lives, the aftereffects are often complex and frequently misidentified. These may include difficulty managing emotions, self-injury, severe anxiety and depression, chronic problems with identity and relationships, intense feelings of guilt and shame, substance abuse, and medically unexplained physical symptoms. Through therapy, I create a safe and supportive space where the impact of trauma can be faced and explored, where fears and destructive behaviors can be overcome, and where patients can begin to re-establish a sense of safety and connectedness in the world.
